India has taken the top spot in the new Test rankings from the International Cricket Council (ICC), surpassing Australia on Tuesday. The country also maintained its position as number one in T20s. Meanwhile, England remains at number three in Tests but has significantly reduced the gap between the top two teams, according to the rankings published by the ICC.
Since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took over, England has won 10 out of 12 Tests after a dismal run of one victory in 17 matches. The rankings reflect all completed series since May 2020 and have dropped results from the 2019-20 season, as per the ICC.
India previously topped the Test rankings for a month in December 2021, but Australia has been the number one team since January 2022, having defeated England 4-0 in the Ashes. South Africa and New Zealand occupy the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, followed by Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.
Ireland and Afghanistan are yet to play enough Tests to earn a place on the rankings table. India continues to dominate the T20 rankings, extending their lead over England, who remain in second place. New Zealand has climbed to third place, overtaking Pakistan and South Africa.
Australia is in sixth place, ahead of West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The updated rankings for One-day Internationals will be released on May 10, according to the ICC.
